The Many Benefits of Aquatic Therapy
Aquatic therapy offers numerous benefits that make it an excellent choice for physical therapy:
Reduced Joint Pressure and Impact: The buoyancy of water supports body weight, significantly reducing stress on joints, and allowing for pain-free movement during aquatic therapy sessions.
Enhanced Mobility: Water resistance promotes improved flexibility and range of motion, facilitating exercises focused on locomotion and gait training.
Pain Relief: The soothing effect of warm water alleviates muscle and joint discomfort, providing relief from chronic pain conditions such as arthritis.
Reduced Swelling and Improved Circulation: The gentle hydrostatic pressure of water, combined with aquatic exercises, enhances circulation and aids in edema control, benefiting individuals with cardiac conditions, POTS, and swollen joints.
Improved Strength and Endurance: The natural resistance of water helps in building muscle strength and endurance without the need for weights, making it an effective medium for strength training.
What to Expect in a Pool Therapy Exercise Program
Aquatic therapy sessions are organized:
Typically, the aquatic therapy session starts out with a land-based evaluation to go over your history, assess your strength, balance, and range of motion, and then your PT will create a custom pool program for you.
You may begin with low-resistance exercises to target your specific issues. Movements may include walking, stretching, and resistance or balance exercises.
Subsequent sessions may be in the pool and/or land. When back in the pool, your PT will progress your exercises so you may perform cardiovascular activities like deep water running, fast walking, or small hops.
Strength activities may be performed to target your legs, arms, or core.
Balance exercises may also be used to help you reduce falls and balance better without falling.
